Tis the season for giving! Right? Sometimes in our world the perception of the holidays get mucked down with consuming MORE, MORE, MORE. We get flooded with finding the best deals, steals, and thrills instead of focusing on simplifying our crazy lives. It is easy to sit back and justify every purchase with a reason why it's a good spend of money, but all the “stuff” just piles up overtime. Don’t get me wrong, a gift or two is a wonderful thing but not when you are purchasing them for yourself everyday online! More “stuff” also comes in the form of social media too, as it does not have to be tangible. Decluttering your life can happen in a variety of ways if you are willing to take the challenge.
How To “Be More With Less”
Every year we get the chance to start over, to feel fresh and clean from the grime that can hold us back, and some of the grime I am referring to is physical clutter. I am not talking about changing your entire life, but instead I am encouraging you to make simple adjustments. The first step to enriching your life is to downsize. Go through your home room by room and get rid of anything that does not bring you value.
Examples of this: Old magazines, shoes, clothing, scratched cd and dvd’s, user manuals, old coffee mugs, expired makeup, broken toys, and unused kitchen appliances.
Once you have gone through each room and see items you want to get rid of simple take a trash bag and grab the items. Once they go in the bag, they should not come out. You can donate these items if they are functional, to someone who might give them better use! Just like that, you will be on your way to freedom.
5 Creative Ways To De-Clutter The Home
- Give yourself 5-10 minutes to go through the home and check for unwanted items. This does not have to take all day!
- Focus on putting items in the trash bag, and not taking them back out. Try and fill up the entire bag.
- Try and get rid of one item a day for one month.
- Pay close attention to your closet. Any clothes you wear turn the hanger the opposite direction, and after six months you will know which clothes need to go.
- Have four boxes: Keep, donate, trash, or relocate and stick to them!
The second way to be more with less, is to detox from things that may bring you down or take time away from important people. For me personally, I did a social media detox for one month after our son was born to spend more time on him. It also helped me focus on my family, and reminded me to be grateful for what I have versus comparing to others. If you are in need of simplicity, then set a small goal to clear the clutter both in the home and on your phone.
Examples of this: Social media, unhealthy relationships, working after work is over, and negative self talk.
Tis the season for giving, and this could result in your time as well. Sometimes an act of kindness goes a lot farther than an item wrapped in a box. Giving your time to help those in need is another empowering, economical, and environmentally friendly way to be in the spirit without acquiring more. Being overwhelmed and under inspired does not have to continue anymore. Stop working harder, sleeping less, and spending more and trade it for a more purpose driven existence. Get rid of clutter and give yourself more grace, love, and space to live freely! Living a more simple life means simply loving yourself a little more! You have the power to be more with less, so get to it!
